He/she as a core member of the Global Senior Management Team (SMT), will lead the development and execution of IAVI's external and internal communication strategy and operations. The position will be based in IAVI's headquarters in downtown Manhattan (New York) and will lead the Communications team at headquarters as well as its global locations. IAVI has communication associates in Amsterdam, New Delhi, and Nairobi. The Global Head of Communications will also lead the Global Communications Council, an internal cross-functional platform which informs communication activities across the world.. This role will have strong internal visibility with the Board of Directors, as well as external visibility with major donors and funders, scientific organizations, key thought leaders, and policy makers.. Reporting to the COO, and working closely with the President & CEO, the Vice President and Global Head of Communications (Global Head of Communications) will serve as an integral member of the Global Senior Management Team. The Global Head of Communications will be responsible for the development of IAVI's internal and external communications strategy as a key component of IAVI's overall strategy.. The Global Head of Communications will develop and execute a world-class communications plan for IAVI, directly managing communications activities that promote, enhance, and protect the organization's reputation and maximize the impact of IAVI's global health programs. The Global Head of Communications will be responsible for the development, integration, and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities relative to the strategic direction and positioning of the organization and its leadership.. This individual will be an ambassador for the organization with key partners, stakeholders, and the media to advance the organization's position with relevant constituents and drive broad awareness and donor support for the organization. The Global Head of Communications will be responsible for IAVI's varied and integrated communications products and services including: web, e-news, and other online communications; media and public relations; marketing; scientific and stakeholder communications; and internal communications channels.. The Global Head of Communications will lead the Global Communications Council, a cross-functional, global platform that integrates the views of key stakeholders across IAVI, ensuring that the impact of the Communications activities and programs are maximized.. Communications Strategy, Vision and Leadership. * Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance IAVI's mission and goals; broaden awareness of its programs and scientific priorities; increase the visibility of its programs and its global health impact across key stakeholder audiences; and build IAVI's reputation as a scientific thought leader through a scientific communications strategy.. * Create a marketing/public relations strategy that will allow IAVI leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, such as the scientific community, policy influencers, and major donors.. * Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.. * Serve as communications counselor to IAVI leadership.. * Develop high-impact communications tools for use by IAVI and its donors enabling both the articulation of IAVI's value proposition and the broadening of awareness about IAVI's global health impact through its programs.. * Develop IAVI's internal communications strategy to improve communications and engagement across departments worldwide.. Communications Operations. * Oversee development of all IAVI print communications including the annual report, marketing collateral materials, and electronic communications including IAVI's website and other digital tools; manage relationships with associated vendors.. * Serve as a spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization.. * Exercise judgment to prioritize donor needs and opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material as needed.. * Actively engage, cultivate, and manage media relationships to ensure coverage surrounding IAVI programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects.. * Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning, and staff development.. * Manage IAVI's internal communications to ensure the timely flow of information across the organization through townhalls and email updates.. * Coordinate and lead participation and thought leadership at major events and conferences and ensure IAVI's contributions at key scientific meetings and events are leveraged to maximize impact and awareness in the field and to key audiences.. * Work with IAVI scientists and partners to generate scientifically accurate and widely accessible messaging.. * Support fundraising efforts through messaging, events, marketing.. Team Development/Management. * Build and manage a communications team to support the development and execution of the communications strategy.. * Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.. * Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.. * Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustments.. Qualifications:. * Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, global health, life sciences, or related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred.. * Minimum 10 years' experience in a senior management communications role either in-house or with an agency or in the life sciences space.. * Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing comprehensive strategic communications, media relations, internal communications, and marketing program to advance an organization's mission and goals.. * Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top tier reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements.. * Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific and technical information, including proficiency in managing dissemination of key findings from peer-reviewed scientific publications.. * Extensive successful writing and editing experience (externally focused) with a variety of print and online communications media.. * Creative and thoughtful on how new media technologies can be utilized.. * A minimum of five years' experience in planning, writing, editing, and production of newsletters, press releases, annual reports, marketing literature, and other print publications.. * Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output.. * Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching a team of communications specialists.. * Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills.. * Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers.. * Stature, gravitas, and confidence to gain the credibility and respect of high-performing Board of Directors.. * Self-reliant, good problem solver, results oriented.. * Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.. * Excellent and persuasive communicator.. * Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance and administration initiatives.. * Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, IAVI's Board of Directors, and staff.. * Ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker.. * Passion for IAVI's mission..
