The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms by guiding justice innovators, nationally and internationally. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities.

The Staten Island Justice Center offers an array of programming for both youth and adults in Staten Island, focusing on engaging those with current or past justice involvement. The Justice Center provides judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys with alternative community sentencing options that hold individuals accountable in a way that is meaningful, proportionate, and restorative. The goal is to provide participants with individual and group services that help them to avoid future contact with the justice system and promote swift case resolutions that bolster public confidence in justice.

Reporting to the Director of Court Operations, the Coordinator,Community Engagementis responsible for the day to day operation of the Justice Center's court mandated community service program and will play an essential role in re-thinking community service as a form of civic engagement. The Coordinator, Community Engagement is also responsible for leading outreach efforts and building partnerships to respond to community needs and requests for community restitution projects.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining the community service programming calendar and ensuring that there is variety in service sites across all of Staten Island;
  • Planning and implementing innovative community service projects for court-mandated participants who are assigned to community service;
  • Performing service alongside a group of participants mandated to perform community service and providing supervision that is grounded in the tenets of procedural justice, service learning, and in a manner that is supportive and strengths based;
  • Establishing and maintaining strong partnerships with community stakeholders, including but not limited to local block associations, business improvement districts, and city and state agencies to develop community service projects;
  • Maintaining relationships with all community service partner sites;
  • Completing and sending daily attendance rosters to community partners;
  • Monitoring and reporting on compliance to court stakeholders and collaborating with court stakeholders to assist in engaging participants;
  • Providing coverage for intakes, scheduling, and rescheduling of mandated community service participants;
  • Motivating participants to complete their mandated community service hours and engage them in social services when needed;
  • Planning and implementing community engagement events, in collaboration with Justice Center staff, such as community panels and community clean up events;
  • Maintaining participant records, oversee documentation of program data, and collaborate with Director of Court Operations to maintain quality of data;
  • Participating and attending staff meetings, in-service trainings and on- and off-site visits as well as staff evening and weekend community meetings, events, and programming, when necessary;
  • Performing other duties as required by the Director of Court Operations.
  • Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in human services field with 1-2 years of work experience or a HS diploma with 3-4 years of equivalent work experience. The ideal candidate will have supervisory experience, community outreach experience, and previous experience working as a facilitator, preferably with court-involved populations. Knowledge of community-based resources in Staten Island preferred. Bilingual (English-Spanish) preferred. The ideal candidate is also extremely motivated and self-driven with a creative approach to program development. Excellent written, organization, and time management skills are required. Candidate must be a skilled communicator, able to work in a multi-disciplinary setting, and maintain strong relationships with organizations, both onsite and in the community. Maturity, reliability, excellent judgment and sensitivity to working with people in a culturally-competent manner required. Must be interested in working with justice involved individuals and providing services in a strengths based manner. Seeking a self-starter who can successfully be part of a diverse workforce and get things done in a fast-paced environment. Driver's license required.

    Position Type: Full-time, some weekends and evenings.

    Compensation: Salary range starts at $55,000 and is commensurate with experience.
