We seek an energetic Laser Engineering Intern to work in a fast-paced laser product development environment. The Intern will work directly with Lumentum engineers and scientists to evaluate components and larger optical systems in support of the product development process. The candidate should have a demonstrated hands-on experimental inclination as well as a basic facility with numerical modeling techniques and software.
Characterize optical system components and verify performance against design
Align and characterize laser cavities and laser sub-systems
Use numerical modeling tools to predict optical sub-system performance
Evaluate system reliability based on modeling and experimental results
Communicate experimental and modeling results in written and oral reports to team management
Strong analytical skills, judgment and problem solving ability.
Team player with the interpersonal skill and personality to work with other team members
Ability to work independently and take initiative
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
Excellent communication skills (oral & written)
High level of integrity, work ethic, and commitment to continuous improvement
BS in Physics or Engineering
Presently in Master’s program in Physics, Engineering or equivalent
Strong background in Optical physics including Electricity and Magnetism, Optics and Lasers
Previous hands-on lab experience with lasers and optics in coursework or previous employment
Strong experimental inclination – must be excited about building things in the lab
Experience with one or more numerical modeling environments (Matlab, Mathematica, etc.)
Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
