The Facility Services Department s focus is on maintaining a safe, clean, and effective environment for the MIT Lincoln Laboratory community, as well as providing the infrastructure that aligns with and supports the Laboratory research initiatives in a high-quality, and cost-effective manner.
The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring that all Department personnel uphold the core value of safety by implementing and maintaining safety programs. A successful Safety Officer will develop positive professional relationships while working closely with field personnel, all levels of management and outside agencies. Responsibilities include:
- Evaluate current facility conditions, assess risks and implement appropriate corrective-action plans and policies
- Perform safety surveys and inspections, prepare written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive measures where indicated and follow up to ensure measures have been implemented
- Drive continuous improvements in safety performance and programs
- Conduct accident investigation and prepare report identifying possible accident causes and hazards.
- Plan and implement training for employees in work site safety practices and regulatory compliance
- Manage reporting requirements for waste removal and effluent
- Act as a liaison between management, outside local safety agencies, fire inspectors and insurance carriers
- Create a system for communicating safety and health issues to include:
- General employee/department safety meetings
- Formal safety training for safe work practices
- Posting of various safety communications
- Development of a safety suggestion system
- Coordinate and conduct periodic construction site visits to identify unsafe work conditions and practices; document and communicate site visit information
- Coordinate other supplemental inspections whenever new processes, equipment, substances, or previously unrecognized hazards are found to be present
- Verify that corrective measures are completed, including recommendations of the safety committee, insurance carrier, fire inspector and/or other safety consultants
- Review and complete corrective actions for all injury and illness investigation reports within the department
- Training and training documentation for staff, contractors and sub-contractors
- Hazard identification and risk analysis
- Bachelor's degree in Health & Safety or a related scientific field
- Minimum 10 years of experience in Environmental, Health and Safety
- Must have in depth knowledge of United States and Massachusetts EH&S regulations and standards, and demonstrate effective interaction with regulatory agencies.
- Thorough knowledge of regulatory requirements relating to OSHA, EPA and Mass DEP regulations and codes.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and verbal skills.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management, employees and regulatory representatives.
- Leadership of a diverse work team, with the ability to anticipate and determine resolutions to a variety of issues.
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with a wide variety of department personnel.
