Instructors arestrongly encouraged to use stories and exciting lessons to teach chess conceptsin a way that will help participants remember the techniques or strategiesreviewed. Chess is an activity designed to give kids an opportunity to learnthe game of chess, improve their chess skills, and to enjoy competition againsttheir peers. Novice players will be taught the basic rules, the value ofpieces, and how to checkmate. More experienced players will learn differentopening and defense strategies, various tactics, and will be given theopportunity to challenge themselves by solving chess puzzles. While students willhave the chance to measure their progress through wins and losses against theirpeers, the main focus will be on encouraging good sportsmanship and on havingfun. New York Edge Chess Specialists must embrace positive child and youthdevelopment principles and practices. These include building on youth strengthsrather than focusing on youth deficits; setting and maintaining highexpectations; understanding the centrality of and fostering positiverelationships with peers and adults; providing age-appropriate and challengingprogramming; engaging participants as partners, not just as consumers ofservices; promoting positive identity formation and helping young people tofully develop their potential. New York Edge Chess Specialists respect andvalue the cultures and traditions of participants, their families and theircommunities, and treat all participants and staff equally, irrespective ofrace, religion, sex, gender identity, national origin, age or disability. NewYork Edge Chess Specialists must appreciate the range of abilities and diverseneeds of children and youth in our programs.Essential Job Functions:* Building a classroom culture in which scholars develop a lovefor chess and enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills;* Planslessons, projects and units for use in the after school program and ensure thesuccessful execution and implementation of these plans.* Teaching a rigorous chess curriculum to participants thatbegins with chess basics and progresses to checkmate patterns and tactics;* Coaching and developing a team of participants to compete incity, state, and national chess tournaments;* Coordinating and leading family chess nights and internalnetwork chess tournaments* Engaging in training and collaborating with chess specialistsacross the organization to benefit from targeted feedback and professionaldevelopment related to instruction and content.* Engagingyouth in the following areas through the arts: critical thinking, evaluation,and risk-taking* Adaptingteaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needsand interests.* Promotespositive character development in all youth* Coordinatesubject related trips, guest speakers, special events, scrimmages, tournamentsand college tripsRequiredskills:* Able demonstrate all of the basic rules of chess: Movement ofthe pieces including all the conditions of castling, checkmate, check, all theconditions of a drawn game, how to properly set up a chess set and including EnPassant.* Able to teach the principles and basic strategies of thethree phases of the chess game (opening, middle game and endgame).* Knowledgeof tactics, positions, openings, endgames, gambits, traps and mates* Havea positive attitude and follows directions.* Relatesto children, members and other staff in a positive manner.* Abilityto plan and initiate age appropriate games and activities.Qualifications:* Highschool diploma* Minimumof two years of chess related skill, knowledge, or experience is required.* Tournamentexperience a plus* Haveteaching experience with a record of propelling student's understanding andlove of chess* Musthave passion for New York Edge's mission and demonstrated interest in the fieldof education and youth development.* Able to work between 8:00AM-6:00PM* Experienceworking with children of multiple intelligences and differentiated learningstylesLocation: Astoria, Long Island City, South Richmond Hill, Ozone Park, East ElmhurstTime: After School Hours - 2:30 pm to 6:00 pmTo apply, please visit our website atnewyorkedge.org/careersAttime of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearancesthrough the Department of Education and Department of Health.New York Edge is an EqualOpportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.Disclaimer: The statementsherein are intended to describe the general nature and level of work beingperformed by the employee in this position.
