JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible to perform complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues. Identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, analyze chemical content of fluids, and cross match blood for transfusion and organ transplantation aseptically prepare cells for use in cellular therapies. The results of these tests are used in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
The Automated Testing Laboratory is a high-volume, fully automated lab that uses Cobas 8000 modular analyzer series and automated track. Penn State Health is one of the leading teaching and research hospitals in the country. It is a multi-hospital health system, Academic Medical Center and Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center serving patients and communities across Central Pennsylvania. The system includes Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State Children's Hospital, and Penn State Cancer Institute in scenic Hershey, PA, as well as Penn State Health St. Joseph Hospital in Reading, PA. Penn State Health shares an integrated strategic plan and operations with Penn State College of Medicine.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Associates degree for Medical Laboratory Technician or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited institution required.
MLT (ASCP) - Medical Laboratory Technician, American Society of Clinical Pathology Certification (ASCP) required OR must be ASCP certified within one year of employment at the Penn State Hershey Department of Pathology.

Applicants trained outside of the United States must provide documentation of equivalency evaluation of their education and training to ensure it is equivalent to CLIA requirements. The equivalency evaluations will be performed by a nationally recognized organization. Ex. National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES), the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE). The applicant is responsible for paying the cost of the equivalency evaluation.

Good customer service and communication skills required.
Must be self-motivated and able to prioritize work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

Able to stand frequently, walk frequently, sit constantly.
Able to lift/carry 0-20 lbs frequently; 21-50 lbs occasionally.
Able to push/pull 0-50 lbs occasionally.
Able to climb occasionally, reach constantly.
Able to use hands for simple/firm grasping.
