JOB SUMMARY:

Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center's Heart and Vascular team is seeking a customer service focused Specialty Service Referral Assistant to help us in our mission to create a better patient experience!

The Specialty Service Referral Assistant acts as a critical support partner to physicians and clinical care team by coordinating patient care encounters and scheduling navigation. This role assists in acquisition of outside medical records and images, tracking of required updates, organizing information and

database assistance. As a valued team member, this individual will also be tasked with retrieving and recording labs, triage of patient and provider phone calls and general assistance to nurse coordinators.

The first-line resource for patients, the Specialty Service Referral Assistant will facilitate the patient through the complex medical, surgical or procedural care continuum. This individual will triage a high volume of patient and provider calls, faxes or messages and report urgent results to coordinator to ensure timely follow up.

The Specialty Service Referral Assistant will have a high level of autonomy and must be able to manage priorities effectively as he or she will be responsible for modifying patient schedules 1 - 3 days prior to date clinic to ensure maximum physician and clinical team efficiencies. As a team member integral to facilitating an organized and end-user friendly process, this individual confirms appointments/tests as needed and notifies patients to ensure that they have all the information necessary.

As a key-member of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals the Referral Assistant validates the availability of surgeons for surgery scheduling, tracks, records, and reports to nurse and surgeon lab and test findings completed as part of the preoperative or post-operative plan for patients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate's degree OR High School Diploma with two (2) years of experience in a medical office setting required.

Knowledge of Medical terminology required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Proficient with Electronic Medical records (EMR).

Ability to multitask and prioritize duties.

Detail oriented and self-directed to accomplish work.

Ability to communicate with

diverse populations and multidisciplinary care team members.

Proficient with Microsoft Office Products.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Medical Assistant (MA) preferred.

Knowledge of Cardiology or Cardiac Surgery terminology preferred.
