    General Summary:

    A Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the practice of physicians and other health practitioners running smoothly. The duties of medical assistants vary from office to office, depending on the location and size of the practice and the practitioners' specialty.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    Provides administrative support including, but not limited to, the following:

    Takes patients' medical history, information pertaining to the patients' visit to the doctor, and record vital signs of patients to help the doctor with diagnosisHandles pre-authorizations/certifications as necessaryRelays information to patients regarding preparation of laboratory tests and examinationsArranges examining room instruments and equipment and keeps the examining rooms neat and cleanRegistration, filing and maintenance of medical records and documentsInitiating and maintaining correspondence with patients and insurance companiesProcessing medical insurance claims, medical billing and electronic claims, and incorporating correct coding proceduresRespects and maintains privacy and dignity of patients and assures patient confidentiality at all times

    Other related responsibilities:

    Represents the clinic in a professional manner in person, in telephone conversations, and in written correspondencePerforms basic functions such as photocopying, scanning and faxingPerforms as Patient Services Representative, as neededAny other duties as assigned

    Education and Experience:

    High School Diploma or GED requiredMedical Assistant Certification from AAMA, AMT, NHA or NCCT requiredMinimum two years of experience in a medical office setting requiredKnowledge of medical terminology, preferredKnowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Word and Outlook is required

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Phlebotomy, EKGVital signs, patient assessmentAdministration of medications (Oral, IM, Sub-q, Intradermal, IV)Ability to work independentlyStrong oral and written communication skills are essentialAttention to accuracy and detailDemonstrates a clear understanding of the importance of teamwork and staff satisfaction
