Saint-Gobain Research North America is looking for a driven, talented, and creative researcher to join the Films and Fabrics R&D team. The Films and Fabrics business develops a wide range of high-performance products designed for use in extreme conditions and highly-demanding applications. Reporting to a Principal Scientist, the Senior Research Engineer will perform R&D work in the field of polymeric materials and composites to support the development of innovative new products, technology transfer and scale-up, and product and process improvements. Working closely with R&D colleagues, product managers, process engineers, external customers, and the manufacturing plants, the candidate will create and execute project plans, perform lab-scale experiments and manufacturing trials, and analyze and present data. The candidate will play a role in proposing projects and programs and serve as a technical leader and mentor within the team.

The successful candidate will:

  • Utilize sound technical knowledge of materials, processes, techniques, and products to generate original ideas, develop fundamental knowledge, improve product performance, reduce costs, and optimize production processes.
  • Research and track new technical applications and competitive products and processes.
  • Participate in technical conferences, author appropriate articles/reports, and be active in professional societies.
  • Interact with R&D and Business Managers, Product Managers, Sales Managers, and customers to develop the requirements of new products/projects as well as identify new or improved technologies to meet business demands.
  • Independently manage multiple projects simultaneously, on time, with proper documentation, and within budget to meet business and customer expectations.
  • Define technical approach and milestones, conduct experiments, interpret research results, develop prototypes, and lead manufacturing trials.
  • Effectively use Gate Process methodology/ideology to guide research projects.
  • Carefully document and clearly communicate progress and results to a diverse audience.
  • Ensure that intellectual property is captured and protected through proper procedures.
  • Assist in the worldwide launch of new products and technologies.
  • Support the field testing of experimental products; define field test parameters, provide training, gather data, and interpret and report results.
  • Demonstrate an open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility.
  • Seek out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
  • Communicate effectively in an industrial environment and coordinate with plant operations.
  • Effectively lead cross-functional teams by managing (either directly or indirectly) others to execute and deliver project objectives.
  • Provide technical direction to technicians and equipment operators.
  • Develop an understanding of company policies and corporate structure.
  • Continually champion efforts to drive HSE environment consciousness in the organization.

  • Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with experience, including but not limited to: demonstration of familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on analytical output, patents, and technical documents.
  • Experience working with high-performance polymers and composite materials, including formulation, processing, characterization, and mechanical testing.
  • Rigorous research methodology and careful attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve technical problems by combining scientific knowledge and hands-on experiments to undertake specific tasks and projects.
  • Project leadership skills, including project management, team collaboration, and excellent written and oral communication.
  • Ability to maintain composure and work effectively in high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to accelerate research activities to meet the aggressive demands of a fast-paced research environment
  • Proper and safe equipment operation and chemical handling (HSE).
  • Respectful communication and ability to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate ability to network within and outside of R&D.

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years experience, or MS with 3+ years of experience, or entry level PhD in Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or other related disciplines.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes/equipment in an industrial or research setting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary to communicate with the plant, with customers, and to report progress on projects.
  • The successful candidate should be able to solve technical problems by combining scientific knowledge with the output of literature searches and hands-on experimentation
  • Must be willing to travel in the US (25-50%) for customer visits, plant support, and production trials.
