First Hand - Freelance

The Juilliard School is looking for individuals to work on a per project/show basis with our Costume shop in the role of First Hand.

Responsibilities:

* Constructing of new costumes
* Altering of existing costumes
* Pattern corrections, pattern truing, pattern grading
* Washing and rolling fabrics
* Cutting
* Machine sewing- industrial and domestic, straight, zig, serger and blind hemmer
* Hand sewing and finishing
* Coordinating base and undergarments as needed
* Assisting in fittings & measurements
* Supervising of stitchers as needed
* Pressing and steaming as needed
* Working with apprentices and students

Qualifications:

* Established work experience with dance, opera and theater costumes
* Knowledge of costume construction techniques
* Ability to follow instruction and work independently
* Ability to work in a team and maintain a professional demeanor at all times
