The Editorial Director will lead all editorial efforts for CNN Digital's commerce initiatives. In this role the Editorial Director will be responsible for leading the editorial strategy and tactical operations, providing vision and direction for all of CNN Underscored content.
This is a leadership role, providing editorial and business vision while also managing both people and process, which requires a strong understanding of commerce content and experience in building and leading teams. The role will be critical to developing the editorial growth strategy for the future of CNN Underscored.
* Lead and direct a staff of writers and editors, focusing on building out skillsets and coaching and developing employees to turn them into future leaders and managers * Recruit, hire, train, and develop employees, both full time and freelance * Work to build upon and refine the compelling, unique, and authentic voice of CNN Underscored * Allocate assignments to staff that best matches their skillsets, oversee editorial resources and processes, and work closely with the Senior Director of Business Development to manage budget * Expertise and knowledge in latest digital trends, technology and best practices for social media, commerce content, and SEO * Identify and execute on strategic growth opportunities as it relates to both traffic and revenue * Ensure editorial content meets and exceeds established tone, AP style, and is consistent across verticals * Operationalize process for updating content and work with team to ensure staff is consistently using best practices to update, optimize, and enhance visibility of content * Test a variety of approaches to article formats (reviews, buying guides, and deals posts) to determine which template and article structure leads to the highest conversions * Partner with Business Development team and ad sales to develop content with sponsorship potential * Establish close relationships with other editorial department leaders to coordinate and optimize upcoming content * Management of staff and content voice should directly correlate to an increase in revenue per page performance * Benchmarks for success of the role include both effective leadership and management of personnel and in hitting and exceeding annual revenue targets
* Undergraduate degree in Journalism, Marketing, Creative Writing or related field * Minimum of eight years of experience in editorial and content creation * Four years in people management and in leading a digital editorial organization * Graduate degree a plus Competency * Must be very detail oriented, organized, and have strong communication skills to work across multiple teams and platforms * Strong leadership and managerial skills * Experience with SEO and updating and optimizing existing stories * Passionate about researching and finding the best products and deals across the web * Strong understanding of commerce performance data and analytics * Flawless verbal and written communication skills
